Join us for our next dance- March 22nd!
The Betsy Branch Trio will provide the music and
Chela Sloper will be your caller for the evening.
What you need to know about our dances:
If you’ve never been to a contra dance (a quarter to a third of the dancers on any night are newbies- we welcome you!), we STRONGLY recommend the beginners warm-up at 7:00pm when we run through most of the basic moves you’ll need to know. That way we’ll all have the movements in our heads before the regular dancing starts at 7:30pm.
Each dance is taught with a walk-through before the music starts. During the evening we’ll do several contras, a circle mixer, a waltz or two, there may even be a square dance thrown into the mix.
The music is provided by a live band – great local talent from Bend or from the greater Pacific Northwest area- playing celtic jigs and reels, old-time Southern fiddle tunes, and newer compositions by talented contra musicians. The bands usually consist of a fiddle, mandolin, guitar and percussion. It’s guaranteed to make you want to move your feet.
Come with a partner, with friends, or by yourself. This is a social dance. People you don’t know may ask you to dance and you will be dancing with various people throughout each dance. Beginners of all ages are welcome! Clean, soft-soled shoes are appreciated.
Admission is $8 a person, if you become a member of Bend Community Contra Dance, you will enjoy $1 discount at each local dance. (Children 10 and under are free but must be accompanied and supervised by a paying adult. $20 maximum for families).
Dances in Bend are located at The Boys & Girls Club of Central Oregon 500 Northwest Wall Street, and held on 2nd Saturdays and some 4th Saturdays from autumn through spring. All are welcome!

Some exciting developments at Bend Community Contra Dance:
1. EMAIL. We have a new EMAIL address. If you would like dance reminders, please send an email to email@example.com so that we can have all our contacts up-to-date. Notices for dances and all communications for our Bend Community Contra Dance will be using the gmail account.
2. MEMBERSHIP. We are now a MEMBERSHIP BASED organization. For your membership “dues” of $10/year you will enjoy $1 off every dance. We will recognize other… Oregon Contra Dance memberships, as well: so visiting dancers from Corvallis, Eugene, Portland, Ashland, etc. — who are members of their local organizations — can also enjoy $1 discount.
(You do not have to be a BCCD member to dance, our events are open to everyone!)
3. TRAVEL JUG. We’re going to try a method used in other dance communities: there will be a donation jar to collect additional money that will be split among bands and callers from outside of Central Oregon to help defray their travel expenses
Always evolving and changing, contra dancing comes to us from New England where it’s been popular since the 1800′s. In a contra dance, couples dance in opposing lines with moves prompted by a caller. If you’ve ever done square dancing you may recognize some of the moves.
If you’re more visually oriented check out the following contra dance videos!
What do I think about contra dancing? Its a great way to unplug for an evening, to dance to some great live music and have fun meeting other folks in our community. -Ron B-R
