Join us starting in the fall for our next contra dance season -
First dance on October 11th!
Contra dancing comes to us from New England where it’s been popular since the 1800′s. In a contra dance, couples dance in opposing lines with moves prompted by a caller. If you’ve ever done square dancing you may recognize some of the moves.
What you need to know about our dances:
If you’ve never been to a contra dance (a quarter to a third of the dancers on any night are beginners), we STRONGLY recommend the beginners warm-up at 7:00pm when we run through most of the basic moves you’ll need to know. The regular dancing starts at 7:30pm.
Each dance is taught with a walk-through before the music starts. During the evening we’ll do several contras, a circle mixer, a waltz or two, there may even be a square dance thrown into the mix.
The music will be provided by a live band – great local talent from Bend or from the greater Pacific Northwest area- playing celtic jigs and reels, old-time Southern fiddle tunes, and newer compositions by talented contra musicians. The bands usually consist of a fiddle, mandolin, guitar or piano. It’s guaranteed to make you want to move your feet.
Come with a partner, with friends, or by yourself. Contra dance is a social dance and you will be dancing with a mix of people. Beginners of all ages are welcome! Clean, soft-soled shoes are appreciated. Admission is $8 a person. Children 10 and under are free but must be accompanied and supervised by a paying adult. $20 maximum for families. There may be a donation jar at each dance for bands and callers from outside of Central Oregon to help defray their travel expenses.
Dances in Bend are held on 2nd Saturdays and some 4th Saturdays from autumn through spring. Our dances are located at The Boys & Girls Club of Central Oregon 500 Northwest Wall Street (an alcohol and smoke-free venue).
