Welcome to Bend Community Contra Dance

Thanks for a great dance season!

See you all in October 2013!

-What Is Contra Dancing?

Always evolving and changing, contra dancing comes to us from New England where it’s been popular since the 1800′s.  In a contra dance, couples dance in opposing lines with moves prompted by a caller. If you’ve ever done square dancing (as a kid in P.E.?) you may recognize some of the moves.

We start with a 30-minute introductory workshop for newcomers and those wanting to brush up and then we get into some serious dancing. Each dance is taught with a walk-through before the music starts. We’ll do several contras, a circle mixer, a waltz or two, there may even be a square thrown in during the evening.

The music is provided by a live band – great local talent from Bend or from the greater Pacific Northwest area- playing celtic jigs and reels, old-time Southern fiddle tunes, and newer compositions by talented contra musicians. The bands usually consist of a fiddle, mandolin, guitar and percussion. It’s guaranteed to make you want to move your feet.

Come with a partner, with friends, or by yourself. There will be plenty of people to dance with and beginners are always welcome! We run through all the basic moves during our workshop so come early! Clean, soft-soled shoes are appreciated.

What do I think about contra dancing?  Its a great way to unplug for an evening, to dance to some great music and have fun meeting other folks in our community. -Ron B-R

Come dancing with a partner, with friends, or by yourself. There will be plenty of people to dance with and beginners of all ages are welcome! We will have a live band playing old-time or celtic music and a caller leading you through all of the moves. While contra dancing uses moves similar to those in square dancing, we will run through all the basics during our workshop so come early. Clean soft-soled shoes are appreciated.

Dances in Bend are located at The Boys & Girls Club of Central Oregon
500 Northwest Wall Street, and held on most 2nd and 4th Saturdays from autumn through spring. Our emphasis is on community. All are welcome, whether it’s your first time or you’re an old pro!

-About BCCD

Bend Community Contra Dance (BCCD) was founded in 2002 when a group of avid Bend-area contra dance enthusiasts agreed that more organization was needed to serve the dance community. The group organized a team, and the rest, as they say, is history…

Contra Board elections are coming soon! Do you want to help us by serving on the board? Contact one of the board members to volunteer and help keep contra dance alive and well in Bend!
